Simply Law Jobs celebrates fourth birthday with record results

This week sees the fourth birthday of Simply Law Jobs, the leading niche law recruitment jobs board.
The site was launched in the spring of 2004 and unlike many other recruitment sites that have been launched and fallen by the wayside; SimplyLawJobs.com has gone from strength to strength during this time.
Since joining the Simply Online Services group of jobs boards at the end of 2007 and a subsequent re-brand in January of this year, this success has been even more marked.
There are currently over 15,000 live jobs on the site and nearly 18,000 unique visitors were recorded in March this year.
Clients of Simply Law Jobs are benefiting greatly from the site’s success in many ways. Not only are there more job seekers than ever before (over 10,000 at present) and a growing CV database, but also application rates have doubled month on month compared to a year ago
In addition to this, there are dedicated account managers who are on hand to advise clients and help them get the most out of their recruitment advertising campaigns.
Michelle Jones, Project Manager for Simply Online says "I am ecstatic to see the business doing so well and firmly establishing itself as a top industry player.
“Since Simply Law Jobs became part of Simply Online it has grown dramatically and our client advertisers are certainly reaping the benefits.”
For more information about SimplyLawJobs.com please contact Ian Partington on 01772 639030 or email ian@simplygroup.net.

Men are CV liars

According to some latest research, 1 in 10 men lie on their CVs. BackgroundChecking.com quizzed almost 1,500 respondents and found that whilst 12% of men admitted to lying about their job title on their CV, just 7% of women did the same.Likewise, more males were willing to exaggerate their educational qualifications, with 14% of men questioned admitting to falsifying this information on their CV and job application forms, whereas only 11% of women would do the same. Avis Easteal, general manager at BackgroundChecking.com, said: "HR departments need to check every application thoroughly. If people believe they can get away with lying on their CV, then they will. There are serious implications for anyone who employs a person without checking their credentials, whether qualifications for the job, experience or even employment eligibility." For example, the recent introduction of the Immigration Act means that a company can be charged up to £10,000 or even face imprisonment if they employ someone who is not permitted to work in the UK."

Naked Law: Nothing can stop a good Policeman
Nude policeman confronts thief while off duty – yes he was stark naked when a thief tried to steal his wife’s car in the early hours.
Metro.co.uk reports “Faced with the sight of a naked, torch-wielding man running towards him, the offender made a run for it – only to be apprehended by the policeman's (clothed) wife, who grabbed him by the collar. He managed to get away again briefly – perhaps spurred by the fact that a naked guy was ordering him to lie on the ground – but was quickly picked up by some properly dressed policemen shortly afterwards.”

Money Can’t Be Me Love (but it can get you a good legal team!)
On the steps of the High Court Heather Mills attempted to spin her divorce settlement as a victory. The fact that she had represented herself, saved approx £600,000 in legal fees & negotiated a settlement of £24.2 million was dressed up as a positive outcome. Unfortunately, like much of Heather Mills’ life the facts don’t quite add up.
The legal fees really are small change when compared to her initial petition for £125 million and the widely predicted settlement somewhere in the region of £30 million. To spend £600,000 to gain £4 million seems simple arithmetic. In the logarithms of Heather Mills’ mind for some reason it doesn’t. The loss in the region of £4 million is dressed up as win. I can’t believe she is really that self deluded.

The harsh reality is that the money Paul McCartney spent on his legal team was money very well spent. Mills hubris, her misplaced beliefs that lack even the basic rudimentary skills and with no legal training that she could negotiate a positive outcome has back fired spectacularly.
McCartney’s side of the case was represented by Fiona Shackleton of Payne Hicks Beach LLP. Shackleton who represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Diana, in contrast with Heather Mills total inexperience, is a lawyer at the top of her profession. Although McCartney has lost out on some minor points; the yearly amount for his daughter, the upper limit of salary for her nanny. In the cold light of day he has come out of the settlement much better than his ex-wife. The settlement has barely dented his vast wealth. In comparison to the divorce settlement of Michael Jordon £75.5 million, Neil Diamond £75.5 million and Steven Spielberg £50 million it can be seen as a huge failure. Heather Mills hasn’t secured even a pyrrhic victory, no she has just highlighted the need for quality legal advice and a top legal team.

Junkies, Judges & Jail
Junkies, Judges & Jail is the second in Yorkshire solicitor Steven D. Smith’s comic legal memoir series, and there is no rest for our hero – by the end of the first chapter, there’s the “accidental death” of a boa constrictor to deal with, and that’s just the start of the mayhem!
If you enjoyed Boozers, Ballcocks and Bail, you’ll find much to love in this second title which follows roughly the same formula. It’s a combination of hilarity and pathos.
You can find out more about the author and read extracts from both titles at his website:

CLAYTON APPEAL FOR LEGAL TEMPORARY WORKERS
Clayton Recruitment are launching an appeal to make local people aware of the current vacancies that they have available and are waiting to fill. The Clayton Group are attempting to abolish the myths that surround working on a temporary basis and explain why working for a recruitment agency as a temporary worker can fit in with a persons lifestyle and give them the flexibility they crave.
Clayton Recruitment place temporary workers into roles that are right for their profession and works closely with the candidate and employer through every stage. Clayton Recruitment provide positions into all different sectors including Legal. A recruitment agency places temporary staff in organisations and charges the employer. The worker is then paid by the agency. A temporary worker can be placed for different periods of time depending on the requirement of the company and the type of position that they need filling.
The Clayton Group has a dedicated Temporary Workers Consultant, Tracy Bolan, who aims to create an awareness of the need to recruit valuable temporary workers to place with the companies that are currently waiting for a candidate.
Tracy commented, “Temping, as it is commonly known, is an increasingly popular choice for employees and the demand is so high at the moment that we cannot place people quickly enough. Due to the high calibre of our personnel, it is often difficult to move the candidate to another company as they fit in so well wherever they are placed!! We want to promote the diversity of professions that are available to temporary workers and focus on the skills that individuals possess. Temporary work is so diverse, and an individual can gain so much from the different environments and roles that they will be covering.
Temporary staff enjoy the flexibility that a role offers, which includes the ability to work when they want to, with the added bonus of new experiences encountered from working within different organisations. Temporary workers can be used to cover holidays, illness or maternity leave and may only be required for a short period of time.
Lynn Sedgwick, Managing Director of The Clayton Recruitment Group concludes, "It is fantastic that demand for our services is so high and our extensive database of temporary workers is now at a stage where most of our candidates are placed with companies for the interim period. We are actively seeking more temporary workers available for an immediate start. We pride ourselves on providing, an efficient service, ensuring cover can be provided as and when required. We take care of all administration issues, allowing companies the freedom to carry on with their work day without any disruptive issues."

5 Ways to Drastically Improve Your Resume in 10 Minutes
5 Ways to Drastically Improve Your Resume in 10 Minutes By: Vincent Czaplyski
Follow these quick and easy tips to build yourself a better
resume in under 10 minutes flat.
* Use strong, action oriented language that describes
specific skills or accomplishments.
Go through your resume from top to bottom and eliminate weak
language. Don't write "Was in charge of large graphic design
department that increased company revenues" when you can say
"Managed 12 graphic artists in major creative projects that
increased revenues by over 3 million last year."
Whenever possible, eliminate all forms of the verb "to be"
(is, are, was, am and so on), as demonstrated in the
previous example. Instead, replace them with strong action
words that paint a compelling picture.
* Add bullets.
Bullets are a great way to transform lists that would
otherwise make tedious reading in paragraph form, or that
would benefit by a cleaner layout. They make the job of
reading your resume more pleasant for the reader. A perfect
candidate for bullets is a list of accomplishments related
to a single job. For example, "Postmaster, 1998 -2003"
followed by 3 or 4 major accomplishments in bullet form.
* Write a specific, concise job description.
If the job you really want is "Director of Human Resources
at a Fortune 1000 company," say so. Don't write "Middle
management position at a large or mid-size company" or
something equally vague. That covers a lot of territory. You
need to help the company with the exact job you're looking
for find you. Put yourself in the hiring manager's shoes.
Would you call a candidate for an interview in the hopes
that she is a good match, or would you call the person whose
job description specifically indicates she wants the job?
* Don't include every single position you've ever held.
Your resume is a document designed to land you an interview,
followed by a job offer. There will be times when omitting a
position - especially if it has no relevance to the position
you are seeking, may be in your best interest. This is easy
to do where omitting short term positions or special
projects conducted as part of an ongoing job assignment will
not create an obvious "hole" in your background that you
will need to explain.
(There are ways to avoid making an employer suspicious of
resume rough spots, like gaps in experience or experience
that lacks relevance to the position you are seeking. A
professional resume writer can offer you specific advice on
ways to do so, considering your unique background.)
* Spell check.
When you're finished improving your resume, run a final
spell check. Your word processor's spell checker probably
won't contain all the acronyms and specialized industry
jargon that your resume likely contains. In that case, take
the time to manually check each flagged item to make sure
your resume is spelling error-free.

How To Recruit The Best Legal Candidates
How to Recruit the Best Legal Candidates
Are you a legal firm looking to recruit a new solicitor or legal secretary? Are you wondering how to find the best ILEX graduate or paralegal in your area? Do you need quality legal candidates to fulfil your companys legal work or law jobs?
The tips listed below should help you get the best legal job searchers.
Four Steps to Recruiting the top level players in the Legal Field
1. Post your Legal Job on a legal niche job board.
I know it sounds so simple but many firms and recruitment agencies are not yet clued into the niche job boards market. So you want legal candidates then don’t post on a generalist board. You will get a raft of poor quality responses that will take time to sort and the likely hood is you won’t find the new member of staff you are looking for. Your advert will also get lost amongst all the other jobs on the board. No if good quality candidates then use a board like:
Simply Law Jobs
Its easy to use for both recruiters and job seekers. The roles are broken down into Lawyer and Support staff and can be further sorted into area of law and region. If you are seeking a solicitor in Shefield or a Legal Secretary in Liverpool then you can post these details in your legal job advert.
2. Use an Legal Recruiter Agency
If you do not want to advertise directly then you should use a recruitment agency that specialises in the Law Jobs/Legal jobs market. These agencies have a stack of quality candidates, local firm knowledge, contacts and experience in the field. Although they may save you time you will have to pay for their services more than you would for placing an advert on a legal jobs board like www.simplylawjobs.com
3. Use In House Referrals
You may discover that an existing staff member may be the best fit for the role. Are the member of departing staff if they know of anyone within the company that could replace them. In a field such a law many of your staff will know other people within the industry who could become your next lawyer or paralegal. Encourage a culture that fosters this kind of referral. If possible even include a cash bonus for finding staff.
4. Make use of specialist CV databases
As well as being an advertising portal most job boards also carry a large CV database. Again for the legal profession niche is best. Simply Law Jobs has an online database that is searchable for a fee. Take time to search the database and you may be able to headhunt your perfect employee without have to shell out on a fee for a headhunter.
A combination of the tips above should result in your finding the perfect lawyer or Paralegal for you role. It really is that simply.

"Children's Rights Vs Press Freedom - Who Wins?"
"Children's Rights Vs Press Freedom - Who Wins?"
Eventy is pleased to be helping Quarriers to organise a
conference taking place on 11th November focussing upon
"Children's Rights Vs Press Freedom - Who Wins?". It is a
national conference taking place at the Forum in Bath and
there has already been a great deal of interest in the
event from both the public and the media.
The media provides the majority of the public with their
window on the world. It is their source of news,
information, gossip, debate and education. The media also
has enormous responsibility in balancing entertainment
and/or the public right to know with social health
and protection for the vulnerable. Where is the correct
balance between the rights of children and the freedom of
the press? All of the debates will have the opportunity
for the audience to participate and question speakers. A
final question and answer session will pull the conference
together with recommendations and future action proposed.
We are delighted that the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP will be
joining us as a key note speaker, along with Lynn Geldof,
European Regional Communications Advisor for UNICEF.
Martin Bell - Broadcaster & previously MP for
Tatton, Cheshire - will be hosting our final Q+A session of
the day. There are also a range of organisations involved
ranging from the UK Youth Parliament and Children's Express
to CAFCASS, the British Association of Social Workers
and the Voice of the Listener and Viewer. Delegates will
come from a range of professions and services from
solicitors and charities to social care and press offices.

New heights in online advertising
New heights in online advertising
31/10/2005 onrec.com
The latest IAB (Internet Advertising Bureau) findings show that value of online advertising revenue this year in the UK is set to top £1billion, for the first time.
The findings have been lauded by CEO of the online job-board Yngve Traberg, which recently launched a ground-breaking new website, and looks set to ride the rising tide of online advertising success.
Traberg said: “With the number of online users available, it has now become paramount for companies to have a coherent online advertising strategy. For the job market in particular, the Internet is a powerful tool for making the right connection between employers and would be employees. Clearly the more experienced people are in using the Internet, the faster they will be able to take up the opportunities it provides. Consequently the number of candidates who look at the Internet as their primary source of new career opportunities will increase, as online advertising has.”
The IAB findings, which have been produced in conjunction with the World Advertising Center and PriceWaterhouseCoopers, have highlighted a rise of 62 per cent in online advertising to £490million for the first half of 2005, while in comparison, overall advertising rose by just three per cent.
The findings pinpoint the rise in the number of broadband Internet connections as the reason behind the revenue increase. "The growth in online advertising is showing no sign of slowing down," said Paul Pilkington, from PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
"The Internet is an exceptional medium in that it now acts as a source of entertainment, information and communication for the majority of the
UK population.
"Advertisers are realising this and allocating their budgets accordingly.”
These half-year figures have prompted the IAB to predict online advertising revenue to surpass the £1bn mark.
This it the first time that online advertising has achieved growth above billboard advertising, and with the first-half figures higher than the entire revenue for 2003, showing no signs of change, the online future is looking bright.
